Updates On Me

I had an interview today! There was a sign by the time machine at work that a part-time position had open up in vision center.

I've always said that I'd want to transfer there if I had to choose, so on a whim I went to personnel to ask what hours a part-timer worker gets in that department. I get a guaranteed 32 hours right now and we're making ends meet (though we don't have much money to spare at the end of the month), so anything less than that and I'd have to pass. The woman who works in personnel said there was also a full-time position opening up, with $12.50 an hour, 40 hours a week. During my interview, I mentioned that I was open to full time. I also asked how many hours a part-timer gets, and they said on average 32 hours, but if certain quotas aren't met the manager can decrease my hours. So I'm not sure I want to risk that...

I think the interview went well? I'm not sure I can say it went great! but I did the best I could. We'll see how things play out!

I've been doing less fic reading lately (*GASP*) because I find myself spending hours playing Hollow Knight, a gorgeous 2D animated video game. I'm soooo not good at games (I spend more time watching Markiplier do Let's Plays if I'm interested in a game because he plays far better than I ever could) but I'm making pretty good progress at this game.

Tumblr has this thing where they like to write little posts about humans meeting aliens, and how weird humans would be to outside points of view. I have an "alien" tag for posts like that (you'll find some repeats, but sometimes people reblog a post and add new things to it). At the bottom left of the screen, you'll see 1, 2, etc. - click those and it'll take you to page 2. I bring this up because apparently someone on reddit is writing a piece of fiction along those lines, Humans Don't Make Good Pets. I haven't read HDMGP yet, but I did read the fiction that inspired it: The Kevin Jenkins Experience, which is only 6k and AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT. Check it out if you think it'd be something you're interested in!This entry was originally posted at http://popkin16.dreamwidth.org/227899.html. Please comment there using OpenID.

As I mentioned in my last post, tumblr loves to speculate on how terrifying and weird humans would be to aliens. We come from a deathworld, where you can die in a countless number of different ways; we're like space orcs, hard to kill and monstrous; we dye our hair and tattoo ourselves and purposely poison ourselves for fun (alcohol); etc.

I love that kind of thing - taking normal human behavior and looking at it through the lenses of a species that finds it new.

Along that line, I just discovered that The Kevin Jenkins Experience - and it's related Humans Don't Make Good Pets - is actually part of a REALLY HUGE universe, called The Jenkinsverse.

As described on the series page:

"The thing about evolving on a death world is that you don't really realise you're doing so until you get the chance to leave it. Up to that point the presence of carnivorous monsters, venomous micropredators, extreme climatic conditions, geological instability, the most lethal cocktail of microbial and viral life forms in the galaxy and of course the crushing gravity, seemed entirely natural. Until we left Earth we thought ourselves rather weak, frail, defenseless creatures because we only had earth fauna to compare ourselves to. You can imagine our surprise then, upon joining the galactic community to find ourselves in fact to be enormous, robust and insanely dangerous in our own right." - Anonymous.

Another description:

The Galaxy is a big place, and life will get started practically anywhere. But sapient life requires stability, peace, and an ecosystem that's generally conducive to allowing a species to get away with devoting lots of calories to all that spare brainpower, and sitting around thinking about things. On the nastier kinds of world, life is too hectic, too dangerous and too unforgiving for any animal to become sapient.
Or so the galactic community used to believe, before the discovery of Homo Sapiens.
It turns out that the conventional wisdom was wrong, it's just that the native sophonts of a deathworld treat their intellect in much the same way as a vicious predator might treat its claws - as a weapon, and as a survival tool. Humanity has spent thousands of generations eking out a living on a planet where simply surviving from day to day is a serious challenge, and have come to view themselves as the plucky underdogs, struggling to slay dragons and conquer impossible odds. Human stories are full of insurmountable challenges and the heroes who rise to meet them.
As far as the rest of the galaxy is concerned, however, humans are lightning-fast killing machines that are effectively impervious to all but the most powerful weaponry. In the Jenkinsverse, humans aren't just the aliens - we're the alien monsters.
And it's only a matter of time before we leave Earth...

I'll probably end up compiling it into a word document so I can read it offline, too. Even though that's going to be A LOT of work.

I've been feeling so lackluster about all my fic ideas lately. I'm really not feeling the fic I started for the harlequin challenge, so I've been trying to come up with an idea that I do like, and nothing is happening. I've never been idea blocked before! It's incredibly frustrating.

Maybe I'm putting too much pressure on myself lol.

New Ship

Don't worry, I still really ship McShep :D A friend of mine was going to start a rewatch of The Flash and invited me to join. I'm easily persuaded when it comes to ships - if you get to me first and talk your ship up, I will totally start to ship it too (and then nothing can make me stop).

Harrisco is Harrison Wells (Earth-2)/Cisco Ramon. It's not a popular ship - there are a total of 187 fics. But I ship it PASSIONATELY. Cisco doesn’t trust Harry at first (because ~reasons) and Harry is there to Get Stuff Done, Not Make Friends. Also, Harry is a dick. I love him, but that's how it is. So at first there’s a lot of sarcastic jabs and tension BUT they often wander off to Do Science together (sadly not a euphemism). Slowly the tension eases, and soon Cisco is making movie/tv show references that Harry gets (and quotes back), they finish each other’s sentences, and are often on the same wavelength. Cisco doesn't put up with Harry's shit, and they do this thing where they toss items the other person needs without needing to ask.

So by the time you get to this adorableness in gifs, it is even more satisfying because you got to see them grow into it.

BUUUUUT it does take until season 2. Season 1 is amazing in terms of plot and stuff, but season 2 is where the shippyness happens

I want to gush about them, but to give you an idea I want to link to some gifs. So you can see what I see~

Cisco wants to ride that into the sunset
+ They are such little shits+ Cisco's faaace and Harry moving closer

Okay that's all I have for now, but I plan on making a ton more gifs, so you'll probably see more of them in the future. Or not, because I put my stuff behind a cut and you can ignore as you want :)

Some updates

My dad's side of the family is visiting from out of state. They usually only come up about once a year - if that - so all week, on my days off, I've been staying out until 11pm to visit with family. The lack of downtime and naps has me feeling tired constantly, so I haven't been doing much fandom stuff lately other than reading. I haven't written anything, or beta'd anything, because I just cannot brain when I get home lol. But everyone is leaving Saturday/Sunday, so after that things will be settling into their normal routine. I took yesterday - Thursday - off because my one uncle was only going to be here Thursday and Friday, and I work both those days. It's going to make money ridiculously tight at the end of the month, but it was worth it. I haven't seen him in three years.

Other than reading, I've been listening to podcasts. I just finished Limetown and LOVED it. Fascinating and at times creepy, it pulled me in until all I could think about was listening to the next episode. I have a huge list of podcasts I want to listen to, some of them quite long, so I have plenty to choose from. I think if I ever do get caught up on my podcasts, I'm going to listen to more podfics. My life could always use more John & Rodney~

My birthday is coming up - the 23rd. I'm going to be 28. It's super weird to think that I'm approaching 30 - I still feel like I'm 23, and I have to actually do the math in my head before I'm like, "Oh yeah." Where the hell is this year going?

I was rewatching 1.05 Suspicion. The one where there's a ~spy in Atlantis because the wraith keep showing up wherever AR1 goes. AR1, plus some miscellaneous military guys and an anthropologist are on a planet examining some ruins. They're attacked by the wraith and take cover behind some fallen columns, with Rodney and Anthropologist Guy furthest in the back, behind the military guys. John shouts, "Move out!" and Rodney & Anthropologist Guy take off running, surrounded by military men.

Rodney has a thigh holster, so presumably he's been trained to shoot a handgun (I refuse to believe John would take him offworld without even the most basic of training), but he doesn't even reach for it, too busy clutching his bag. Compare this to later seasons, when Rodney would have stood at John's side, firing his weapon, while the other scientist(s) retreat through the gate.

Of course, when John is stunned, Rodney freezes and turns back. One of the military guys yells for Rodney and a military guy to grab John, and Rodney does. So he's being my brave baby even if he isn't comfortable with a gun yet. There's also no sign of Anthropologist Guy - presumably he's still running, lolll. Also, I'd just like to point out Rodney is the one arguing that they need to go back for Ford and Teyla.

Later in the episode, John insists that Rodney be apart of the team that is laying a trap for the wraith using Teyla's necklace. It has the dialogue:

John: You seem nervous.
Rodney: No, I’m doing this.
John: Yes, you are. I just said you seem nervous.
Rodney: Oh, I thought you said, “Rodney, you don’t have to do this.”

He's so nervous, poor thing. When we do see Rodney later at the wraith trap, he's holding a P90. So he's not even comfortable with a handgun yet and they're bringing out the big guns, so to speak.

Later in the show, Rodney joins strike teams, which you would think would be made up of specially trained men. He sticks with his team and doesn't retreat through the gate until they do. He grows up so much.

I've had this fic idea stuck in my head that I like quite a bit. It's FAR outside my comfort zone, both in terms of plot and content. I've got about 3k down and I'm just...not happy with any of it. To a degree that isn't normal for me (since I never like my writing). I think one of my problems is that I got the idea and just immediately started writing about it, but I should maybe sit down, work out some of the worldbuilding, maybe redo some of the plot. I'd really hate for my struggle to kill whatever motivation and fondness I have for the idea.

I was so so excited to find a package from [Unknown LJ tag] - a signed copy of Migrations! I took a selfie with the book, I just have to get off my lazy bum to post it :D

My brother agreed to continue paying the bills, but we decided that - because he has a baby on the way - we should probably start looking into finding a cheaper place to live so he'll have money to, you know, buy diapers and other necessities. We should be picking up the title to our new place tomorrow, have some minor repairs to deal with, and then...moving. Again. We've tentatively figured out that I can afford cable/internet, but we'll see how reality shapes up. I'll keep everyone apprised :)
